Sunlight Medical was founded in 2007 with the goal of improving the quality and reliability of micropipettes used in assisted reproductive technology (ART). At the time, pipettes on the market lacked consistency in specification and quality, particularly the ICSI pipettes which were often too large, damaged oocytes, and lead to higher degeneration rates. Laboratories encountered pipettes of varying sizes in the same box or even damaged pipettes, making delicate micromanipulation procedures more difficult and less reliable.

Recognizing these challenges, the founders of Sunlight Medical believed they could design and manufacture a better solution. One of the founders, Dunsong Yang, M.D., is a pioneering embryologist who helped perform the first successful intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) in the United Kingdom in 1993. At that time, IVF laboratories commonly produced their own ICSI pipettes, giving Dr. Yang firsthand experience in designing and manufacturing tools for clinical use. This practical expertise gave him a deep understanding of what makes an ICSI pipette precise, reliable, and safe for delicate IVF procedures.

Drawing on this experience, Sunlight Medical developed its own proprietary V-type ICSI pipette design. These pipettes are slim with a short taper to help the flow of sperm in the ICSI pipette. The V-type design quickly proved highly effective and widely adopted within the field, with many other competitors and manufacturers later introducing similar designs.

In the early years, Sunlight Medical manufactured pipettes for Smiths Medical under the Wallace brand. The product rapidly gained recognition in the IVF community, achieving more than 50% market share within just a few months due to its reliability and performance.

In 2014, the world's first IVF clinic published results showing that after using Sunlight Medical's pipettes, oocyte damage rates decreased while fertilization and pregnancy rates significantly improved compared to their previous outcomes.

Sunlight Medical was co-founded by Dunsong Yang, M.D., and Cuizhang Du, who together established rigorous manufacturing and quality standards to ensure the precision and consistency required for IVF micropipettes. Dr. Yang’s dedication to reproductive medicine began as early as 1987. Despite living during a time when China’s focus was on population control under the one-child policy, he had a desire to help couples treat infertility. That motivation, along with Sunlight’s high manufacturing standards, continues to guide the company today in providing clinicians and embryologists with high-quality, reliable, and comprehensive microtools designed to increase the chances of IVF success.
